Paige Wright
Hi my name is Paige Wright. I am 20 years old and am currently a junior at Northern Illinois University. I was born in Douglasville, GA, but moved to Illinois when I was 15 with just my mom. I was raised by my mom in a single parent household along with my older sister. I am very close to my family, and visit them back in Georgia as often as I can. My favorite past times are I writing, listening to music, and reading. When I graduate college I hope to enter the healthcare field, but I do want to write on the side.
The impact of poetry and the spoken word club
I started writing when I was very young. It started out with me creating stories to go along with my cousins pictures. Writing has always been my way of expressing myself creatively, and joining Spoken Word in high school helped me broaden that field. The first two years of high school were rough for me because I was finding it hard to adjust living in Illinois without any friends or family near. I had lost my interest in writing and had no real outlet. So when I joined Spoken Word my junior year I was surprised and enlightened to be introduced to poetry. I had found an outlet and I was finally accepting my living situation. I grew so much in the two years I spent in Spoken Word. Not only did my writing get better, but I gained confidence in myself. I found my voice and learned how to establish my presence on stage and off of it. I loved my time in Spoken word because I found my love for poetry and a community that didn't judge. I even joined a poetry group in college because I wanted to nurture and sharpen the skills I learned in Spoken Word.
