Kyla Robateau

Kyla Robateau

I’m a graduate of Oak Park River Forest High School who went on to study comics and animation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I’m passionate about drawing and writing about my original characters and stories. Creating art is a part of my daily life, and will hopefully be my future!

The impact of poetry and the spoken word club

I attended the Spoken Word Club in my freshman year of high school. It was recommended to me by my cousin who had been a part of it years prior. Immediately I knew that I had found a place where I would meet friendly people who I could share my experiences with. I became close with my performance group, and each of our poems were deeply personal. I still remember many of them and the impact they had. Being in Spoken Word was great for me, it helped me get through a very tough time in my life. I kept making poetry throughout my sophomore year as well, which is when I made this poem.

Top favorite poets or lyricists

While I don't have any famous poetry inspirations, I know that both my cousin and best friend were the two that inspired me to start writing through their poetry. As for lyricists, I'd have to say I really like Tyler and Maggie Heath, who write for The Oh Hellos.

Writing Prompts

  • This poem is a variation of a ghazal.  Look up what a ghazal is and try to write one of your own.

  • Write about a time you didn’t feel like you fit in.

  • Write about a time someone was jealous of you.
