The impact of poetry and the spoken word club

While I felt as though I had friends from different "pockets" of crews during high school (i.e. cheer, athletes, choir, theater, etc.) I did not mesh with anything their extracurricular cliques had going on. The Spoken Word Club (SWC) revealed an identity for me, as I already considered myself a writer, specifically a poet. However, I had no idea of any outlets (especially to be shared with others) prior to the arrival of SWC. The SWC became MY PLACE, my spot, my crew! Not only did it allow me to meet a variety of creative peers, but also honed my craft, built confidence and nurtured my own identity as a writer and my personal development. Overall, poetry (and my connection to it) has made me observant, detailed and at peace.
