Jada Maeweather

Hello, my name is Jada Maeweather. On July 17, 2003 I was born to April O’banner and James Maeweather in Chicago Illinois. Unfortunately, after birth, my mother suffered from blood clots in the eyes, causing her to go into a three-month long coma. After she woke up, she was completely blind. She then went to House of the blind where she had to adjust to her new disability. so, during that time, I was without a mother and was often switching from family home to home with lots of family members taking care of me and being so eager to see the miracle baby. As I got older, I started having trouble in school. I would often get in trouble and eventually end up getting expelled from my first school in kindergarten. Shortly after, I was diagnosed with ADHD after getting spilled. I transferred to a small daycare in Maywood where I started doing a lot better. Once again as I got older, I started having difficulties with my mother's blindness and adjusting to my ADHD. Eventually I did get on medication such as Adderall. my mother eventually took me off my medication because she thought the medication made me act like a zombie” overtime. I still did have trouble in school and eventually did get expelled from my middle school and sixth grade. I ended up switching over to Percy Julian middle school which is in Oak Park where I started doing a lot better. I spent my whole middle school years there and then, I switched over to Oak Park River Forest from freshman to junior year, where I met the lovely Mr. Kahn. After a few tries of trying to convince me to join spoken word, I eventually joined and it was one of the best decisions I have made.

The impact of poetry and the spoken word club

When I first joined spoken word, I only knew the people that I brought with me, which were two friends of mine. It was quite uncomfortable when I first went and my writing was bland considering that was my first time writing a poem. After staying in spoken word, my poetry has evolved amazingly. spoken word has really given me a new coping skill and multiple longtime friends. friends I hoped to have for my lifetime, it gave me my boyfriend, it gave me love and support from everyone in the club. The club is a family where everyone loves and supports everything you do. It is amazing how a group of people can really change your high school years and it is so funny because spoken word was known for Mr. Kahn and Mr. Levin always trying to convert you to the spoken word. sometimes, he would always say “yeah we missed you at the last spoken word meeting are you coming today?”, but they would it would always be in a loving manner it would never be oh you are doing bad it would be we care about you and we want to see you progress so it was always good to know that someone in the school cared about you not just as a student but as an actual person a writer is really comforting.

Top favorite poets or lyricists

My favorite lyrics are from Earl Sweatshirt. He used to be a member of a group named Odd future Wolfgang, but eventually, the group split up. He is still a single artist and I love every single album that he has put out, and the way he addresses actual depressive feelings in his songs brings some type of comfort. Another favorite lyricist of mine is Chelsea Wolfe. She is more of dark country style rock and it’s good. Her voice is angelic, her live performances are surreal and she sounds the same as she does in her songs. I just love how word usage in her songs put together agony and love which are two different types of feelings but she still fits so well. My third favorite artist is Death grips. if you know who death grips are, you more than likely them, Death Grips is more of an experimental rap group who are really known for the sick twisted beats that is like food for my ears, Sometimes I truly can't get enough, I love the constant screaming over these gut retching beats. My favorite poets are Mr. Kahn, Mr. Levin, both Mr. Kahn and Mr. Levin have read poems aloud to classes during poetry week and every time they are practically flawless, My last poet that i've recently been into is Jalen Daniels, his rhymes just flow right together and how the words purely slide out of his mouth so perfect puts me in a trance.
