Abigail Govea

Abigail (Abby) Govea is a graduate of the Oak Park & River Forest Highschool class of 2021. Her older brother, who is also in this anthology, graduated from OPRFHS in 2019. Her younger sister will graduate from OPRFHS in 2023 and her younger brother is currently in middle school. Abby joined Spoken Word Poetry club her freshman year and continued through her senior year. Her older brother, who joined the club his sophomore year, inspired her to join the club. Now, her younger sister is a part of the club and she plans to participate until graduation. In September of 2021, Abby will attend Middlebury College in Vermont, USA. She intends to minor in Luso-Hispanic Studies (Spanish) and to joint major in Environmental Studies/Conservation Biology with a focus in natural science. English Literature and the arts have always captivated her and have been some of her favorite subjects in school. However, it wasn't until high school that she became heavily interested in poetry. Freshman year, her older brother introduced her to the art and since then, crafting and reading poetry has become her hobby. Her mentors, Mr.Kahn, Mr.Robinson, Mr.Levin, and the Spoken Word Club alumni have been an immense support system and inspiration. Through her poetry, she hopes to move others, to reflect the power of writing, and to share her life story. She wants to thank everyone involved in the creation and promotion of the anthology. Abby hopes it inspires the readers to write, either for themselves, or for the world to hear and appreciate their beauty and ingenuity.

Writing Prompts

  • Write about the time you laughed the hardest you’ve ever laughed

  • Write a farewell letter to your anxiety

  • Write about a time someone taught you a life lesson you still carry with you today

  • Write about a time you “faked it” until you “made it” or a time you felt like an imposter

The impact of poetry and the spoken word club

As a reserved person, poetry gives me a voice when I'm too shy to speak. It allows me to express myself in a true and beautiful manner. Performing in showcases gave me a strong foundation for public speaking. As a captain, I developed leadership skills and learned how to guide others through new and unfamiliar experiences. I was given the opportunity to mentor middle schoolers and see them grow as writers. In addition, poetry helped me to become a well-spoken person and a strong writer. I learn more about myself in every poem I write. Poetry is literally a part of my family as my siblings take on the craft themselves. The community in Spoken Word Club has taught me a lot about not only poetry, but life itself. I am forever grateful for Mr.Kahn, Mr.Robinson, Mr.Levin, and all the alumni for giving me an unforgettable high school experience.
